Seems to me I've heard it suggested that Antelope Island has some legends associated with it and the Aztec treasure but I haven't as yet uncovered any substantial information regarding the possibility. WOuld love to hear from anyone that might have additional information or have an idea where I can find additional information. Likewise I'm eager to hear any otehr Utah-related theories concerning "Montezuma's Teasure" with the exception tof White Mountain and Brandt Child's place, both of which I have substantial information concerning. There has been some suggestion that Recapture Creek might be a possible spot as well as The Unintah Range and Kolob Canyon in Zion;s National Park. Interested to hear what you've heard and where I can find out more... Randy Bradford

There is an unsolved murder involved that complicates the issue. I have been talking to one of the sheriff's to try and resolve a bottle neck and have not had much success but I just spoke with an attorney that gave me a great idea to proceed forward. If your still interested let me know?

Posts: 647 Apr 14 09 1:44 PM City Slicker Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Some years ago I read a story on another popular web page that talked about some ancient temples and wars in the Farmington area and also on antelope island. No one else seemed to be interested in this story except myself and so I communicated with this person privately by email. The story went that this persons father had a close friend that came to him (the father) and told him that he had found the remains of an ancient temple up Farmington Canyon. This type of story could easily have been chalked up to delusions, drugs, or what have you, except the person was well known by the family and well trusted. To make the story more interesting he showed the father some ancient artifacts that he said he found with the destroyed temple. Other details of this story also led this man to antelope island where he found a large burial ground from an ancient war. The final part of this phase of the story is that the man was taking gold artifacts out of a place that he found on the island. Apparently he had been removing them for some time with the aid of some pack animals. His body was found murdered along with his animals on antelope island but none of the gold artifacts that were on the pack animals had been taken. I always take these kind of stories with a grain of salt--but I file them away for possible future reference. I never met the guy who sent me the story on the internet, but, a few years after I had received the story, I was talking to a friend of several years about the story and my friend said that he had known the man who was murdered. He said that he had lived in South Weber and always had more money than he should have had based on his employment. He indicated that he had been found murdered on Antelope Island and the murder was never solved. He didn't know much more about the story but it was enough to get me thinking about it again. I am a government employee and have connections to Sheriff's offices, etc. so I decided to ask a County Sheriff friend of mine some questions about it. This is where the bottleneck started--I was going to do a grama request on the murder and see what information was available. Hopefully the report would indicate if there were artifacts involved and start to solidify the story. The problem that I ran into was that "because the murder had never been solved, the reports were still sealed and the case was still open." To complicate matters more, I was told that if it appeared that I knew more than I should about the case, I could become a prime suspect! This was a few years ago and I have talked with Sherrif's a little about the story but have not come to a good way to proceed until a week ago. I was having lunch with a County Attorney and related the story to him. He told me that I should still do a grama request but not be so specific. He suggested that I should ask for information on any murders that have happened on Antelope Island. How many murders do you think have happened on Antelope Island? I might not get all the information I would hope for if the record was opened for public review, but I may get enough to whet my appetite. There are more details to this story but I don't feel that they should be posted here. I hope to get a chance to file the grama request soon and see what happens. There are petroglyphs on antelope island but you have to be in a canoe or boat to see them. I have also heard something about seven caves on Antelope Island having something to do with the Aztec's but I don't know about that. I always wonder how people come to some of the conclusions they do. One thing that I can tell you about Antelope Island and the Great Salt Lake and Lake Bonneville is general--If you were to buy a book on the Hogup Cave excavation from the University of Utah Press, you will see that Hogup cave was occupied for thousands of years including BEFORE LAKE BONNEVILLE EXISTED. The excavation turned up many artifacts, including fish nets--when you hear stories about the cities of gold being located around a lake or sea of salt you are going to have to factor in that these lakes were fresh water some time ago. Hope there is some useful information here. I enjoyed your book Randy. Hope to meet you some time. I was most interested in the giant fossils.

The highest level of Lake Bonneville was at 5,300 feet. It's real hard to build a fire when you're 600 feet below water. The next lower level of Lake Bonneville the "Provo Bench" was formed when the lake was somewhat stabilized at the 4,700-4,800 foot level for a long time. During that time, the wave action of the lake actually cut/formed the cave. After the cave was formed, the ancient people began to use it. There is considerable difference in opinion among the acheologists about how long ago that might have been. Never-the-less, by the time Aztec treasure was being moved around, Lake Bonneville was long gone and the Great Salt Lake was similar to what we see now. Oh, BTW, U of U Archeology Publication # 93 tells all. Posts: 647 Apr 16 09 3:24 PM City Slicker Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Jim, I didn't reach the conclusion that Hogup Cave was occupied before Lake Bonneville existed--it is clearly discussed and shown in the book. I don't have my book with me at work, but, if you have one, look for the picture where they made the vertical cut from the cave ceiling to the cave floor. Fire rings and artifacts are exposed everywhere. The sand layers can be read just like tree rings except now they are in horizontal layers. While most of the sand layers are very thin, maybe an eight of an inch thick, the Lake Bonneville layer is super obvious being many feet thick. Once you get below the Lake Bonneville layer, there are still plenty of fire rings and artifacts exposed, these layers (rings) are pre-Lake Bonneville time frame because they were deposited before the large Lake Bonneville deposit. Also, it was not my intent to mean that the Aztec's occupied this region before Lake Bonneville existed, but, the Aztec's did decend from some group of people unless you think that they crawled out of the ocean, or lake Bonneville, and evolved from a fish into a human form. If the Indian legends talk about seven cities of gold in the Lake Bonneville basin, whose to say how far back the legends go? Could they have been talking about ancestors that occupied the area before Lake Bonneville? If Hogup Cave is good proof that the area was occupied before Lake Bonneville, then what history can be tied to these people that occupied the cave before Lake Bonneville. If the cities of gold can be dated at only a few hundred years ago, then clearly, the pre-Lake Bonneville occupation cannot be considered in connection with this legend or story. This cave excavation tells alot about what the basin was like by looking at the artifacts. Fresh water fish nets--if you look, there are not a lot of fresh water rivers and streams on the west side of the Great Salt Lake--hummm--the lake must have been fresh water at some distant past. If the lake had fresh water and fish, how would that have affected the occupation of the basin--you can probably find just as many, if not more, archeological sites of significance, on the west side of the lake as you can on the east side. With todays geology, you couldn't catch enough lizards on the west side to survive on and no water. Danger Cave and other sites as well as large war sites and low cliff petroglyphs show a large occupation on the west side. You can also find antelope traps and micro petroglyphs on the west side. I would like to hear some evidence of who these groups were and where they went? Who decended from them--Utes, Aztec, Navaho, etc?

But I would consider going back to see those hard-to-reach petroglyphs by boat. I wonder what stories they would have to tell?

Posts: 247 Aug 7 09 8:20 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Since gold and silver were found on Antelope Island in June of 1899, by a prospector, in the assay amount of $8.20 gold per ton and 15 oz. silver per ton, it could be possible that gold was mined by others on Antelope Island before the pioneers came into the valley in 1847. With all the mining going on in what's now Utah and Nevada by the Spanish, who knows what we could find today in the way of precious metals had they not mined them. Also to question is what lies at greater depth beneath the Salt Lake and whether richer deposits are hidden from view, called blind deposits meaning they don't outcrop. It's very likely. The early explorers, some of whom recorded their journeys, and some of what their Indian guides told to them have made mention of this great salt body of water, and the people who inhabited this area. One such record, translated into English, told of how these people had the knowledge of making ornaments of various types of metals. Were these people related to the Inca? That's open to speculation. There were trade routes throughout these United States which allowed these early people to trade with other tribes. Salt was valuable even in antiquity. Would it be to far fetched to suppose that the Inca could of done trade with these early people who had an endless supply of salt? Or even had ancestry linage of their people in this area? Just a thought. So much has happened here in mortality that has never been recorded into the chronicles of mankind. When an old skeleton is unearthed which is wearing a hammered copper bracelet we can only wonder where it came from and who made it. The dead have no voice to say, and analizing the remains can only provide some clues some of the time. Danger Cave is an interesting cave. Before it became a historical site, in digging into the back of the cave I found water trickling out of the rock. Had I not uncovered this spot in digging, I'd of never of believed it. After finding this, I wonder if this is where they got their water from, or from another close by source. This cave was used for many centuries judging from the artifacts that the University found.

Got to see some beautiful rock art, and, some terrible grafitti! But I did not notice the trickle of water you mention. I had some pictures of the inside, but they have been lost somewhere to time!
