Here's the best opportunity for us to find out for sure! The new construction at Echo dam has exposed the bedrock below the dam. If someone can get in there soon (maybe even this weekend) and get some of the sands and small gravels right at the toe of the excavation off of the bedrock and then pan it for gold, we will finally know for sure. They shut down construction after about 11:00 PM, so slip in there after that time wearing dark clothing (no lights or you'll get busted) and get some material. You'll need boots (a couple inches of water in a few places), a sieve (1/2 inch?), a shovel and a bucket. You probably want to dig (sparingly) about 100 feet north of the big pump they have running all the time. Don't dig deep! Just slide the shovel along the shale and under the gravels. I don't think it will matter if you dig on the upstream side of the trench or the downstream side. They probably have at least a few construction lights going all night, hence the dark clothing. Walking distance? About 150 yds. Have someone drop you off on the old road (on the north side of the dam) and come back when you phone them to pick you up.
