Posts: 3958 Jul 23 09 7:08 AM Administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Does any one know what the rules are concerning prospecting and or mining on National Forest Property? Also I have noticed on Google Earth that the green line showing these boundaries does not include any of the lakes, they seem to be excluded... Why is this? If not claimed by the Forest service then who has laid claim on the lakes? I'm not talking about reservoirs.....

She said panning and sluicing are fine, but no dredging. I think she may be wrong. I know someone that would know the answer right off the top of his head, I'll go axe 'im.

If I recall Prospecting, Mining claims and such are ok on Forest, State and BLM,....(For Now) but not state parks or National Monument.... If you can find out....great...But don't axe him........Just ask......

If there is the word "Park" included in the name...usually no mining but some light-weight panning for recreation. On Federal Public Lands, you have restrictions in Wilderness Areas, Special Study Areas, areas of archaeological interest, wildlife preservation areas, and a whole lot more. Check before you use that shovel. Remember the word "Public" means it saved for use by the public, not indiviuals. The days of just filing a claim are long gone...there are a long list of do's and don'ts now days; the new rules include "permits." The govenment wants a part of the action if you locate a new mother lode. Call your local Fed office for the rules for your area of interest.

Actually, for ALL dredging in Utah you must get a permit from the Division of Water Rights. They have a list of streams or rivers that may be dredged in the state. They also list the size of dredge that may be used at each of these sites. Posts: 2 Aug 20 09 11:39 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have prospected and metal detected forest land all over the U.S. including Utah. In the Boise National Forest in Idaho where I live all I needed was permission from the local ranger over the area. I believe that to be standard anywhere but not sure. I have found several cool items in national forests with my metal detector but I made sure that I got written permission from the ranger. I carry a form just for that reason. In Idaho state parks according to laws I have read online you can metal detect at state parks as long as you have permission from the park manager. You might check the books and see if it is the same in Utah. Steve Idaho Treasure Hunters
