From the book "Ceder City Reflections" by Alva Matheson-published 1988. (can be checked out from the local library)
"Located on the north side of Parowan Lake, the hole went down 30 to 40 feet. Curious men dug out the dirt and accumulated debris down to the bottom of the hole finding some rawhide buckets and ropes, but little else. They dug, sampled and assayed all through the nearby area but they never found but a slight trace of silver so the hole was abandoned."
"There have been a number of small gold nuggets found in the area but no one ever figured out where they had come from."
"A spanish pick was found in the Ceder Breaks area." The book lists other mines found in the area as well as interesting artifacts such as rock with hieroglyphics, an old spanish amulet and a rare old castle key pistol found. Alva tells in his book of visiting Holts Canyon near New Castle in 1920. There he found an old spanish erastra on the bank of the stream bed . He tells that floods have cut the bank away and there is no sign of the erastra in 1973. "On a hill some 3/4 of a mile away was the mine where the ore was obtained...The only indication of gold that I "(Alva) "could find was a rock 1/4 the size of a brick which is plastered on one side with a very fine flour gold." The book has alot of interesting information which I hope will be of interest to the members on this forum. There are many sources of good info. out there. Just takes lots of time and a curious mind to find it. Thats what this non-skier does in the winter months in Utah. But I enjoy it!
